American Institute of Chemical Engineers Fall 2022 Fund-ISU

Regional Conference

The Iowa State Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) participated from April 8 - 10 in the MidAmerica Regional Student Conference, hosted by Iowa State. This was a great opportunity for students to represent Iowa State in various competitions and professional opportunities such as Chem-E-Car events, Chem-E workshops, ChemE Jeopardy, Student Technical Paper Competitions and more. The conference was also a great opportunity to network with other students, attend professional development seminars, and represent Iowa State. Twelve students from our chapter who attended the conference participated in the Chem-E-Car Competition, where they placed first and qualified for the Nationals Competition.

Nationals (AIChE Annual Student Conference)

Since the Chem-E-Car team qualified at the Regionals competition, there will now be 20 students from this chapter of AIChE going down to Phoenix, Arizona to attend the AIChE Annual Student Conference. There, Iowa State AIChE members will participate in Chem-E-Car, present their research poster, engage in networking, talk with other college recruiters about grad school and more. Your generosity helps to make opportunities like this trip more affordable for everyone who wants to be active as a chemical engineer outside of the classroom and is much appreciated!

Chem-E-Car Team

We currently have two teams preparing for the next regional conference in April 2023. The teams are experimenting with biological reactions to power their cars, as well as incorporating some new and exciting ideas for their stopping mechanisms. The Iowa State chapter of AIChE has sent a Chem-E-Car team to the national conference for 7 years in a row now! This is thanks to our excellent traditions and outstanding students willing to put in the hard work to be successful. Your support can help us send and prepare the cars and teams for the next regional conference to continue the trend of qualifying for nationals. Thank you for your generosity!

This competition season, we are looking to extend the rich history of naming cars after Pokemon. This tradition began in 2014 with the Squirtle Squad and has continued since with some very creative names. The car for the nationals team is named "Cyduck," and is shown in the picture above. Our students worked very hard to run their cars at the regional competition successfully. Since then, Cyduck has been completely redesigned to have a better aesthetic appeal! At the 2022 MidAmerica Regional Conference, two Iowa State teams competed in Chem-E-Car, which were the Cardinal and Gold teams (the lab coats match the team names). There are new Cardinal and Gold teams that have started working for the upcoming Regional conference in April of 2023.

Research

Students from Iowa State will be attending to present research about the work they do at school. Presenting research is both a competition and a great opportunity for students to build valuable skills to help them in their careers. We have a handful of Iowa State AIChE students who will be presenting their research projects at the conference.

Professional Development

Students will also attend this conference to advance their careers. AIChE has a wide variety of seminars that will educate students on how to be better engineers. The professional development opportunities are endless. There will be companies and sponsors with an exhibit for students to network and visit while there, including Honeywell, the Royal Society of Chemistry, Chemstations, TA Instruments, Alliant Insurance Services Inc. and more.
