2022 AIChE ASC, Phoenix, AZ

November 19, 2022

2022 AIChE Annual Student Conference, Phoenix, AZ, 11/11-11/14:

The members of Chem-E-Car qualified for this conference back in April of 2022 when they placed 1st at the regionals competition. At the AIChE Annual Student Conference, the Iowa State Chapter sent undergraduate students to participate in the undergraduate student research poster competition and the Chem-E-Car competition, and to receive individual/group awards.

Undergraduate Student Research Poster Competition:

5 students presented their research in a competition against over 300 other undergraduates. All 5 of the undergrads put many hours of work into not only their research, but developing their poster and presentation for this competition. There were 8 divisions to compete in, labeled Food, Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology, Fuels, Petrochemicals, Energy, Materials Engineering and Sciences, and Separations. One of our students, Brianna Burton, placed 3rd overall in her division, Materials Engineering and Sciences. Brianna put 30+ hours into developing her poster and forming/refining her presentation for not only this competition, but for previous research competitions as well. She plans on attending an undecided graduate school after graduating with her bachelors in chemical engineering. Of the other 4 students that presented their posters, some are planning on attending grad school while others plan on going straight into industry.

Chem-E-Car:

Our car saw a complete redesign after the regional competition in April. This led to a much cleaner car with VEX Robotics components, an acrylic plate, and 3D printed components. Our car was about $300 all together, which is quite modest, compared to other schools with cars above $1,000. Around 300 students participated in the Chem-E-Car Competition, where we placed 14th out of 38 teams. This was more than exceptional, given that our car was damaged while being shipped down to Phoenix, causing it to lean to the side and not drive straight. There was also a shortage of chemicals at the competition, so the ISU team was only able to run 2 trials before competing. Our team had a great time competing and performed the best given the situation that we had to work with.

Awards and Recognitions:

Michael Galvin received the first year academic award, and Lauren Stauffer received the second year academic award. This award is given to first and second-year students within the chapter that have the highest GPA. Our chapter of AIChE received official honors with the Outstanding Student Chapter of the Year for 2021-2022, which is given to chapters of AIChE that show excellence in their levels of participation from members. It is an honor to say that the ISU Chapter of AIChE has members that show academic excellence and that the chapter is active and progressing.
