Alternative Service Learning Spring Break: Belize

Help students travel to Belize over spring break for one the most formative experiences they will have during their time at Iowa State University. This service learning trip to an underdeveloped country, along with a semester long seminar class, is designed to assist students in understanding their role in the world and how their talents can be applied to their education, their career and the global community we live in. This trip develops tomorrow’s leaders to better understand social responsibility, the history and culture of another country and learn through working alongside community leaders on a common community betterment project. With your donation we can help reduce the cost of this amazing opportunity and make this trip a reality for more of our Iowa State University students!

Belize 2018. Our project was to put new siding on an elementary school building in the village of San Pedro Columbia. Our ISU crew was so efficient with our local construction experts that we had time to install windows/shutters and add roofing materials covering the sidewalk providing needed shade and protection from the heavy rains.

Belize 2017. We installed ceilings and soffits in multiple classrooms making the classroom that were previously only covered by a tin roof much cooler. Additionally the ceilings reduced noise from neighboring classrooms making a quieter learning space and keeping bats and other potentially harmful animals out of the space. We also spent time on a school garden project that teaches nutrition and horticultural concepts to students and families along with some time in the classrooms tutoring students to improve their English skills.
