From all of us in the College of Design, thank you so much for your generous contribution to our Design Closet crowdfunding campaign. With the participation of 32 donors, we raised $3,290 — that's 131% of our $2,500 goal! We are deeply grateful for the enthusiastic response to this project. Our students will benefit immediately from your support as we will be able to purchase portfolio kits and other supplies as we move toward the end of the semester when final projects are due and students begin work on their design portfolios.
Check back here for occasional updates on the impact of your support. We also accept in-kind donations of art and design materials and supplies any time throughout the year. Please contact Jordan Brooks, jwbrooks@iastate.edu, for more information. Thank you again!
We are nearing the end of our Design Closet campaign! With the amazing support of 29 donors, we are 95% of the way to our $2,500 goal with 19 hours left. If just five more people donate $25, we will meet and exceed that goal!
Every amount matters and we are very grateful for your generosity. Please consider sharing this opportunity once more within your network of family, friends and colleagues as we make the final push to reach $2,500 by 9 a.m. tomorrow (Oct. 31).

Students in the Design Studies 102 studio are learning how to develop elevations, side views, plans, cross sections and serial sections. They review and critique each other's work in small groups, which allows them to learn from each other as well as faculty.
Wow! Thanks to all who have contributed to our Design Closet crowdfunding campaign, we reached our initial $2,000 goal! We couldn't have done it without you. Your generosity has inspired us to increase our goal to $2,500 and help even more College of Design students. Check out the awesome work of our first-year students in the DSN S 102 studio (pictured below) who will benefit from your support!
Their Color Interaction Exhibit is on display in the College of Design's Gallery 181 and throughout the atrium through next Tuesday, Oct. 29. The project introduces how to use color as a designer and how one color interacts/reacts and responds to another. Students study various compositional strategies such as collaging and painting. The products include multiple small-scale color studies using various media, and a large-scale triptych. This is one of the projects that students include in the portfolios they submit for review and admission to their chosen majors.
We'd love for you to help spread the word about the Design Closet campaign and help us reach our additional $500 stretch goal. Thank you!

BUILD (Building Up In Leadership and Design) is a one-to-one mentoring program for first-year students in the College of Design, many of whom come from traditionally marginalized populations. Each year, BUILD welcomes 16-20 new members and matches them with returning student mentors based on a variety of criteria, including their intended major.
For the first-year students, we host programs to assist in their social, academic and cultural transition to the university. The mentors receive professional development, especially in their interpersonal communication skills and cultural understanding, as well as the knowledge they are helping other students.
One of the major goals of this program is to provide students with access to resources, including materials, relationships and connections within and beyond the university. Students who are in the BUILD program have access to the Design Closet as one of these resources.
We’re so grateful for all who have already contributed to this important cause. Please share this opportunity within your networks and help us reach our goal!
Huge thanks to those who have donated to our Design Closet campaign so far — we have reached 65% of our goal in just 4 days! Help us maintain our momentum and push this to 75%!
We are 6 weeks into the fall semester, and 9 students already have received supplies from the Design Closet. This number will increase as first-year students begin to develop their portfolios for submission as part of the application process to their desired degree programs. We serve between 100-120 students annually, and your support will make a big impact!
We all create because we were inspired by someone or something in our lifetime. Thank you for being an inspiration!
Our students are on a journey of imagination. Your contribution will help them make their ideas a reality one collage, model, sculpture, drawing, or video at a time!
When our students create, they all start with a draft – a preliminary sketch, a small-scale model, a rough outline — that serves as the foundation for that final, polished project. Your $25 donation will purchase one portfolio kit for a Design Studies 102 student. The kit contains all the basics they need to put together their Core portfolio, which is the foundation for future success in their degree program.
Once they have a draft, our students learn to refine their work until it's the best reflection of their inspiration, imagination and skill. A gift at this level will provide supplies needed for the Design Studies 131: Design Representation class, which teaches methods of visual thinking and drawing as tools for creative problem solving, design development and visual communication. These supplies are essential for the first year, and students continue to use them in their degree programs.
When students have refined their projects to the best of their ability (and deadlines are at hand!), they're ready to submit their work. Donations at this level will provide a comprehensive package of needed supplies for the Design Studies 102 and Design Studies 131 courses and allow students to focus on submitting their best work!
Once a project is submitted, it's time to celebrate! With our students' supply needs met, we can focus on the Design Closet space itself, providing proper organization, storage and upkeep of everything purchased and donated.
Our dream is to provide all College of Design students – regardless of financial need – with their required first-year supplies so they can focus on what matters: turning their creative ideas into reality and preparing for their future studies. Donations at this level will help us help more students and sustain the Design Closet for years to come!
