In 2006, a few driven apparel merchandising and design (AMD) students decided they wanted to gift Iowa State University with a bi-annual, student-run fashion magazine. What started out as a 10-page publication has turned into a magazine that's at least 150 pages long! With the dedication and hard work from ISU students over the years, TREND has been able to produce 32 print issues so far, as well as a monthly online issues released throughout the semester!
Currently, nearly 150 students of different majors are involved in publishing TREND. Without the help of our committee members and directors, the magazine would not be possible to produce. This on-campus club provides students with actual, hands-on experience in their desired fields, ranging from fashion, editorial, advertising, public relations, event planning, photography, videography, makeup, graphic design, and content creation.
This semester, TREND is releasing our 33rd issue, Anachronism. This issue encapsulates and blends ancient and present-day art by unapologetically inserting chronological inconsistency. Art from early centuries that shaped the history we recall today remains the centerfold of many artistic creations and inspiration; however, stories of marginalized individuals and communities were lost and never shared with the world. Anachronism is not a rewrite of the past; it is a tribute in the form of rebirth to these periods by creating art that juxtaposes and rebels against tradition and customs. Through the relocation of shocking elements, we invite you, our audience, to indulge in the desire to explore the possibilities of your imagination. Travel through time as you flip through the pages of Anachronism.
Your donation will go towards the future issues of TREND Magazine; with your help, future students of Iowa State University will be able to gain valuable experience from creating a publication all on their own.
Why donate to TREND Magazine?
TREND Magazine provides real-world experience to students of all majors — 143 students currently, to be exact! This on-campus club is more than simply a club, it is preparation for working professionally in the print and media industries. TREND is a place for like-minded students to meet and collaborate, bettering their creative and problem-solving skills outside of the classroom. It is a creative outlet for students and allows them to envision and create a tangible example of their hard work to bring to future employers. Yes, GPA is important — but experience is crucial in the fashion, print, and media industries. Students who are part of the fashion committees in TREND get to create a photoshoot from scratch, providing clothing, props, accessories and poses. The students in the advertising and public relations committees are able to reach out to real businesses and put the skills they learn in class to use. The students in the event planning committee get to plan the release party for the semester, creating the decorations themselves and renting out a venue for the party. The editorial committee gives students work to add to their portfolios, providing multiple opportunities for students to have published work in the online issues. From these examples, you can see the experience and skills students can gain by being part of TREND Magazine.
TREND offers opportunities to diversify profiles for students, depending on what committees they choose to join. It lets students explore their interests in different publishing fields, helping them further solidify their future endeavors and giving them a taste of what various paths they could take. Directors and committee members learn how to communicate in a workplace-like environment in a professional manner while still having fun and being creative. The students involved in TREND are put in many situations where they have to quickly problem solve, such as if a model doesn't show up for their photoshoot or a garment doesn't fit. Their ability to adapt to high-pressure situations only gets stronger with each semester they're part of TREND.
TREND is one of a kind. We work hard to be inclusive and current, improving TREND's image with each issue. We are simply students writing about, photographing, and styling other students to better our skills to prepare us for post-grad life.
