American Meteorological Society 2023

The Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society at Iowa State University (ISU AMS) is excited to announce that we are attending the 103rd AMS Annual Meeting and 22nd Annual Student Conference in January 2023! With your support, ISU AMS students can present their original research with both poster and oral presentations, learn about cutting-edge research in the field, and network with professionals and graduate school advisors at the career and resource fair, all from the safety of their homes. Students will also explore careers, attend broadcast meteorology tape swaps, construct professional resumes, and practice interview skills at the 22nd Annual Student Conference.  A total of 18 students are attending the 103rd Annual Meeting this month. We hope more students can attend the 104th Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland, in 2024!

During the 2022-2023 school year, our chapter strives for academic excellence, strong community outreach, and building relationships between members. This year our students have had numerous opportunities to network with professionals in the field. One way our students have been able to do this is through Cy's Eyes on the Skies, our broadcast group. These students have made two trips to KCCI to gain feedback and create professional reels (Figure 1). This helps our students have reels to give to potential employers at conferences such as AMS. We have also focused on our chapter's outreach, headed by the outreach chair, Maggie Zoerner, and the outreach committee. This group of students works to help educate students at local schools, build anemometer kits, and speak at conferences for young students in STEM (Figure 2). Something new in the chapter this year is the Female Engagement Officer. This position aims to ensure the involvement of women in our chapter and encourage our female students to network with other female alumni. Grace Hansen, Female Engagement Officer, has worked to have fun activities and professional development sessions with alumni and women in the field for the women in our chapter (Figure 3). In addition to your gifts, students work in football, basketball, and volleyball concession stands to raise money for the AMS Annual Meeting (Figure 4). Students can fully fund their trip to the annual meetings between your gifts and concessions.

Thank you so much for supporting the next generation of meteorologists!
