Forever True Day is live! Iowa State’s 24-hour online giving day launched at noon (CDT) and runs through noon on April 3. This is a great opportunity for us to get a little extra support! Make a gift and then check out ForeverTrueDay.com to see matches, challenges, and all kinds of excitement all across campus.
If you can’t make a gift, make a statement! Encourage giving on social media by using https://forevertrueday.com/a/gday/94048/Stupka and #ForeverTrueDay in your post for maximum impact.
Thank you for helping us get a little extra support on Forever True Day!
Hello Everyone!
This year's FundISU campaign was a major success! The committee wants to give a massive thank you to everyone who continues to make this special event possible each year!
We were able to raise over $3000, exceeding our initial goal! This level of support is incredible!
There is less than one month until this year's 19th Annual Stupka Undergraduate Research Symposium! We are incredibly excited to show off what we've been working towards this year! Stay tuned to our social media accounts to keep updated!
Thank you all so much for making this symposium such a special event each and every year!
Best,
Mason, Liz, Maddie, Tim, and the rest of the Stupka ’25 Planning Committee
Hello Everyone!
With the FundISU campaign coming to a close in a few days we just wanted to share a little bit more behind the scenes pictures from leaf raking in the fall! A bunch goes into making the symposium the best it can be year after year, so we like to a bunch of FUNdraising events with our committee and the Stupka community.
With only a couple of days left, we are still pushing to reach our stretch goal of $3000, so feel free to send our campaign out to any family or friends who may be interested in supporting our cause!
We would like to send a very big thank you to everyone who joined us for this campaign the last few weeks! Your support has meant everything to us!
Best,
Mason, Liz, Maddie, Tim, and the rest of the Stupka ’25 Planning Committee
Hello Everyone!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the incredible support for this symposium. Our planning committee has worked hard all year to make this symposium a success and it is inspiring to see Rob’s vision come to life.
Now that we have reached our initial goal, we want to push further to see if we can reach our stretch goal of $3000. Please consider sharing our project with family and friends, as that helps a bunch in raising funds for this wonderful event!
The extra funds that we continue to raise will help tremendously for next year's 20th planning symposium! Be sure to stay tuned for more information on that after our symposium this year! It will be the biggest one yet!
Best,
Mason, Liz, Maddie, Tim, and the rest of the Stupka ’25 Planning Committee
Hello Everyone!
Today, we wanted to share a bit more about our student and alumni speakers!
BBMB alum Jacqueline Ehrlich will be joining us and sharing about her research: Alohamora! The opening mechanism of an ATP-releasing plasma membrane channel. Jacqueline is a 5th year PhD student in the Kawate lab at Cornell University. She is investigating the structural biology of membrane proteins. She is fascinated by the structure-function relationships of membrane proteins and spends most of her time in the lab purifying proteins, using the cryo-EM, and dabbling in crystallography.
We also will be hosting three senior student speakers from the BBMB department, Tim Stanley, Anna Schwake, and Carly Nichols. Tim will share some of his work on The Glossy2 and Glossy2-like genes and how they play important roles in cuticle structure and function on maize silks, Anna will be presenting on how Lamp1 deficiency disrupts lipid transport in Drosophila, and Carly will share her research on Playing in the Pines: Exploring the Evolutionary Landscape of Conifer Resin Synthases.
We hope you will be able to make it to hear about the research and experiences of all these researchers who have been through our program!
Join us on April 3rd to learn more about these people and share experiences and journeys with numerous students and alumni from here at Iowa State University!
Best,
Mason, Liz, Maddie, Tim, and the rest of the Stupka ’25 Planning Committee
Hello Everyone!
We are already halfway to our fundraising goal! Thank you all so much for supporting Stupka!
Today, we wanted to share a bit more about the keynote speakers who will be presenting their work and sharing about their scientific journeys with us on April 3rd (Only 2 more months)!
Joining us will be Dr. Aadel Chaudhuri, MD, PhD, who is an Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Washington University in St. Louis, and Dr. Tessa Burch-Smith, PhD, who is an Associate Member and PI at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in Missouri.
Dr. Chaudhuri works in cancer genomics research with an emphasis on the development and application of liquid biopsy technologies. His research goals are to discover cancer earlier and be able to better predict treatment response for better personalized treatments with the hope of further survivability in cancer patients.
Dr. Burch-Smith works in plant science research, with an emphasis on cell communication through intercellular channels known as plasmodesmata. Her research goals are to uncover important details on how different parts of plants might exchange molecules and metabolites, and how viruses interact with their hosts, causing disease.
The work of these researchers is pushing the forefront of science in their respective communities, and we are excited to have them join us for another great year of science communication!

Hello Everyone!
Today marks our second planning meeting back this semester, so we wanted to share a bit about what we do in our meetings!
Each meeting starts with a few updates from our Co-Chairs Tim and Maddie. After that, we split into our teams: Communications, Operations, and Design, where we share more detailed updates about what we’ve been doing over the past week. When we finish up in our teams, we then get back together to give our updates to the larger group, allowing us to all stay on the same page. Once we share all our updates, we dismiss the meeting to eat dinner together as provided by our food chairs!
Most of our work as a committee is done by each of our members during the week, where we may communicate with different people and organizations, put out flyers, or work on different fundraising events such as concessions in Hilton!
So much goes into making this symposium a success every year, and we are so thankful and proud of our committee members and of supporters each and every day! Thank you!
Be sure to stay tuned next week for some more information on our keynote speakers!
Best,
Mason, Liz, Maddie, Tim, and the rest of the Stupka ’25 Planning Committee
Hello Everyone!
This year’s 19th Annual Stupka Symposium will be on the 3rd of April! We are so excited to see everyone there!
In the meantime, the committee is hard at work doing concessions, putting together new designs, and planning the logistics behind our operations, including the launch of our FundISU campaign! Your support makes this symposium possible each year, and for that, we are extraordinarily grateful!
This year’s campaign will run through February 21st, and we hope you consider donating or sharing our campaign on your social networks. We have some exciting updates to share on this page in the coming weeks, so be sure to come back regularly and check them out!
Thank you all so much for your continued support of this symposium!
