ISU SAE International Student Chapter

Help SAE International Student Chapter:

During the 2018-19 competition season, SAE International teams will drive over 20,000 miles to 13 competitions around the US and Canada as well as visiting over 1200 middle and high school students across Iowa to help raise interest in STEM. The organization owns a race trailer that is shared by all the teams, but we have owned it since 2001 and after almost 20 years and over 200,000 miles of travel it is getting worn out. We are looking to purchase a brand-new race trailer that will better suit the needs of all 5 teams, and will last for the next 20 years or more. With your generous support, we will be able purchase a high quality trailer that will serve the team for years to come. Additionally, for the second year in a row there are competitions for different teams that occur on the same weekend in different parts of the continent.

What is SAE International?

SAE International Student Chapter is the largest Engineering Student Organization at Iowa State University consisting of 5 student teams with over 250 students that design, build, and participate in competitions domestically and internationally; Aero Design, Baja, Clean Snowmobile Challenge, Formula, and Supermileage.

The purpose of ISU SAE International is to expand upon and apply theory learned in the classroom through participation, leadership, outreach, design, and fabrication of an off-road Baja vehicle, a mini-formula racecar, a fuel-efficient super-mileage car, a high-flying plane, and a clean snowmobile for SAE Collegiate Design Series competitions. SAE International is also heavily involved in local community outreach events aimed at educating youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (S.T.E.M.).

Aero Design: Teams are tasked with designing and manufacturing a large scale radio-controlled aircraft that is designed to carry as much weight as possible.

Baja:  The Baja team designs and builds a single seat off-road race car meant to traverse all manners of terrain at a high speed.

Clean Snowmobile Challenge: Each year, the CSC team modifies a stock snowmobile to reduce the vehicles’ emissions, increase the fuel efficiency, and reduce the sound level.

Formula: The Formula team must construct a prototype race car as a company, focusing on the non-professional, weekend autocross racer.

SupermileageThe supermileage competition challenges teams to design a hyper-efficient, highly aerodynamic vehicle to travel the furthest distance on a gallon of fuel.
