Modeling Practice

Our models have been hard at work for the last 2 months learning their walks and prepping for the show! They had their third practice last weekend, February 10th.  The models have one of the most important jobs in the show, and we are excited to see the unique choreography our Modeling Directors develop. Models, directors, and committee members will be busy this semester with over eight practices, garment photos, and garment fit nights. Check out the YouTube video we’ve attached to see what goes on during modeling practice!

“We just held our third Modeling Practice, where we have worked with each of our 60 models on perfecting walks such as The Step, Back-off and Lean, as well as posture and stage presence. At our last practice, we introduced them our first group walk, The Waterfall, and they exceeded our expectations by far. These models have not met a walk they can’t kill. We have already seen so much progress and confidence build with each practice. We have no doubt that our models will be ready to hit the stage by April 13th. We are looking forward to seeing what more they will have to bring to the table in our remaining three practices.” -Modeling Directors Alexia, Caleigh, and Emily.

Runway Report

The Fashion Show is very excited to be partnering with The ISU Daily for a new, special series called the Runway Report. Lead by co-anchors Les Mwirichia and Olivia Hanson, this video series will highlight an exclusive behind the scenes look into the planning process and progress of The Fashion Show 2019. Episode One was published back in the fall after our brand release in November, and the most recent episodes have covered basketball fundraisers and our FundISU campaign. Follow us on Facebook (@ISUFashionShow) to watch the Runway Report episodes - the next one is scheduled to air on March 8th!

Only One Week To Go

February 16, 2019

Hello Donors! This has been an amazing week for The Fashion Show's FundISU campaign, and we are excited to be over halfway to our $25,000 goal. Thank you for all your contributions and support so far! With only one week left to fundraise, we are hopeful we will reach and exceed our goal before the campaign closes on February 23 at 7 PM. Stay tuned this next week for more updates on what else we're doing within The Fashion Show process in preparation for April 13th!

Introducing our Philanthropy Committee

February 13, 2019

New this year is our Philanthropy Committee! We are happy to have the opportunity to expand on our past relationships with organizations like Dress for Success and Days for Girls, and we are hoping to grow new relationships with on-campus organizations like BIEDA.

We are proud to be partnering with Dress for Success Des Moines for the third year. Dress for Success is a non-profit organization that provides programs to help local women acquire jobs, retain their positions, and succeed in the mainstream workplace.  Their mission is “to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” At Dress for Success, 2019 is “The Year of the Shoe”, and donations of black shoes, black purses, and $10 gas gift cards are in need.  The Philanthropy committee will be collaborating with several other Fashion Show events to collect clothes and accessories throughout the spring semester! If you have any items you would like to donate or have questions about the program, please contact fs.philanthropy@iastate.edu.

Along with Dress for Success, they are introducing a new partnership with Days for Girls. Days for Girls increases access to menstrual care and education by developing global partnerships, cultivating social enterprises, mobilizing volunteers, and innovating sustainable solutions that shatter stigmas and limitations for women and girls. Together, we're creating a world with dignity, health, and opportunity for all. We are hosting a Sew Day on March 2nd from 10am-3pm in Lebaron Hall to make reusable menstruation kits that will be sent to girls in developing countries.

Finally, The Fashion Show is pairing with BIEDA and sponsoring a day during their National Eating Disorder Awareness week. BIEDA stands for “Body Image Eating Disorder Awareness” and helps encourage positive, sustainable lifestyles and eating habits. This is a prevalent issue in today’s society and in the fashion industry. By working with BIEDA, we hope to show our support for healthy, happy minds and bodies. Our event with BIEDA, “Love Your Selfie” will be March 1st on campus at 10am-1pm in Lebaron Hall lobby. We will be taking polaroids with students and creating a large canvas showcasing all of the reasons why we love our selfie!

From Coast to Coast

February 06, 2019

We are so excited to see the momentum our crowdfunding campaign has gained in only 2 short weeks. From all of us at The Fashion Show , we would like to extend a huge "Thank You!" to all of our donors so far! This week we’re sharing our progress on theme, fundraising, and music.

Presenting our 2019 theme: From Coast to Coast. Inspired by a student’s mood board, this theme encompasses the contrast from New York to LA and the melting pot that is American culture. From Coast to Coast represents the vast reach of The Fashion Show throughout the last 37 years and the lives it’s impacted from east to west and everywhere in between.  Our talented Art directors brought their spin on the mood board by incorporating colors to compliment both the theme and Van’s brand. While allowing students to express their creativity and individualism, it coincides extremely well with Van’s “Off the Wall” mission.

We are also very excited to welcome back Nicholas Hadfield as our DJ for The Fashion Show 2019! Nicholas is a graduate of Iowa State University and studied at the Berklee School of Music. He has spent the last three years residing in Los Angeles as an apprentice under producer Eric Rosse and working at Glenwood Place and ES Audio Studios. During that time, he worked on Pablo Alboran’s Grammy-nominated Terral and albums for Idina Menzel, Jackie Evancho, Marie Miller, and Vanesa Martin. Nick has been creating unique and theme-inspired music for The Fashion Show for 3 years, but was involved with the show in 2014 while he was a student at Iowa State.

Our fundraising efforts do not stop after our FundISU campaign ends. Our Fundraising Committee has been hard at work setting up basketball fundraisers at Hilton Coliseum where students work in the concession stands to promote our organization. Our first fundraiser was last week Wednesday during the West Virginia Men’s game, and despite the cold, it was a great success! Our next basketball fundraiser is Tuesday, February 19, during the Baylor Men’s game. Stop by the concession stands that night to say hi and grab a hot dog or two from a Fashion Show student!

We will also be hosting a fundraising night at Blaze Pizza on Wednesday, March 6th from 8-11 PM. Keep an eye out for the event posting on our Facebook page - this will have the Blaze Pizza poster you will need to show at the register!

Introducing the Guest Designer for 2019!

January 30, 2019

Starting early in the fall of 2018, Outreach Producers, Emma Kachelmeyer and Hannah Harnack started the proposal process for securing the guest designer for The Fashion Show 2019. Starting with the company from the top of their list, they worked closely with interim Art Director Ellen Titman, and now Art Directors, Lauren Hanson and Claire Hennessy, to create a presentation to showcase the Iowa State Fashion Show and the benefits of partnering with the nation’s largest student-run fashion show. With little hesitation, good news was received.

We're excited to announce the guest designer for The Fashion Show 2019 will be… Vans!

Based out of Costa Mesa, California, Vans started as a small skateboarding shoe company and now caters to skateboarders, snowboarders, surfers and customers from all age groups with “off the wall” style. Vans offers apparel, shoes, and accessories to match any personality. The classic checkerboard sneakers have been worn since the early 70’s, and new variations of the authentic sticky-soled shoe are created seasonally and customizable online since 2004.

Including two Iowa State alumni from the Industrial Design program, Jerod Harmon and Derek Huenecke, Van’s representatives will arrive at Iowa State the week before April 13th to hold a lecture series on campus with the topic of “Empowering Youth Culture”, meet with prospective high school students during Behind The Scenes Day and explore what Iowa State has to offer on campus. TFS students with over the top fundraising efforts will also be able to attend a lunch with the Vans’ designers during their time on campus. The second half of the runway show will open with Vans’ 2019 collection. The Fashion Show is unbelievably excited and honored to host Vans, and we hope you are excited to see their collection walk the runway on April 13th!
