Children Attend School Because of the Lunch

December 31, 2019

We want to thank all donors for your contributions to the CSRL Growing Education Through School Lunches FundISU Campaign. With your generosity, we have exceeded our goal of $15,000!

On days when the ‘nyoyo’ school lunch is served, attendance almost doubles compared to the days without ‘nyoyo’! During school term breaks, pupils in the agriculture club maintain the school gardens and also receive lunch on those days. The pupils water, weed, and harvest the gardens.

Thank you for  helping us provide adequate school lunches during the school term and term breaks. Please continue supporting our campaign which will end January 3, 2020.

Parents Contribute to School Lunches, Encouraging Sustainability

December 23, 2019

Happy holidays from the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods! We thank you for your contributions to our campaign as we raise funds to support the children and families in Kamuli District, Uganda through the school lunches and gardens programs. We have raised over $12,500 towards our $15,000 goal. The campaign will end January 3, 2020.

The school lunch program is made possible by contributions from the school gardens, Iowa State University-Uganda Program, parents of pupils, and you. Parents contribute part of the white corn, beans, and wood fuel. Involvement by the school’s parents ensures ownership of the lunch program and enhances acceptance while creating sustainability. School PTA members, boards and management teams, teachers, and parents all work toward a common goal to benefit children. We invite you to be part of the team through your contributions.

School Lunches Provide Energy to Learn

December 18, 2019

Schools typically offer a lunch comprised of a white corn porridge of 50 Calories. This is not sufficient to sustain a child throughout the day or for a child to grow and develop. A nutrient-dense stew, called ‘nyoyo’, of 850 Calories provides essential nutrients and energy for the children to learn and play. Isn’t it fun to imagine the children learning in class and also playing soccer at recess? Your contributions will help make this vision a reality.

Poultry Projects Provide Protein for School Lunches

December 12, 2019

Two program schools have poultry projects which provide eggs, a rich source of proteins, fats, and micronutrients for under-nourished school children. The eggs produced by the current poultry projects are not enough for the four primary schools where lunch is served. Additional funds will expand the poultry projects and even purchase additional eggs, improving child nutrition. On the days that eggs are included in the lunch, children call the lunch “delicious”!

Thanks to generous donors like you, we are now just over half way to the goal. Please share this message to help spread the word and perhaps we can reach our goal by the New Year!

School Gardens Grow Nutritious Vegetables

December 03, 2019

How great is it to have a school garden as an outdoor class and learning laboratory with produce that pupils get to eat!? School gardens provide nutrient-dense vegetables, including collard greens, eggplants, onions, tomatoes, and grain amaranth. Extra yields of high-value crops are sold to the community and the income obtained is used to purchase additional key ingredients of the lunch, such as common beans, vegetable oil, and iodized salt. Funds are needed to support the school gardens by providing inputs like vegetable seeds, grafted fruit trees, plant stakes, composted manure, and fencing.

Celebrate Giving Tuesday by making a gift, or contribute in honor of someone you care about. You are invited to share this message with others. Every donation helps.

Improved Kitchens and Supplies Help Feed Children

November 20, 2019

Some primary schools have improved kitchens where lunch is prepared and served. We need funds for additional improved kitchens, efficient stoves, cooking pots and pans, and plates for serving the lunch.  First-grade children need to eat their lunch quickly because their plate will be washed and used for the third graders.  Your support will help us ensure food safety and reduce the time children wait in line to get lunch.  Thank you!
