Mechanical Engineering 415 Capstone Project

Iowa State is partnering with Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services for an outreach project with our Mechanical Engineering Senior Capstone Project. Our team is working with an individual who is a wheelchair user. Using this device has enabled him to work as a delivery driver. During his work day he needs to maneuver onto and operate a rear lift to access the inside of his truck. His current delivery process is very tedious often involving moving 5 gallon containers from his truck to his customers. Some of these containers can weigh upwards of 45 pounds!

Our team is developing a product that will assist him in this process. Our concepts include several different “cart-like” options which will allow him to easily transport these heavy containers. Besides having to move the heavy containers some deliveries require him to make many different trips. Our product will greatly reduce the number of trips he will need to take. This not only will physically ease his process but increase his safety by reducing the number of trips he needs to take.

Our budget is a very limiting factor for this project, we have a goal to raise $2,500. Having these additional funds will allow our team to pursue a more ergonomic and custom design. The team’s concept finalization and selection is directly impacted by the size of budget. With our current budget we will be able to deliver a bare minimum product that can only meet a few of the most important customer requirements. Your donation will go directly support the team by funding costs such as:

  • Machine shop labor
  • Final product delivery
  • Raw material (frame tubing, wheels/ caster, locking brakes, etc)
  • Test and analysis design

With your donations we will be able to have the greater impact by delivering a fully capable, durable, and sustainable product to our client. Thank you for your interest and donations, our team, department, and client appreciate it.

Best Regards,
