ISU Spirit Squad Fundraising Project

Why We are Fundraising

The Iowa State Spirit Squad asks for your support in fundraising for our trip to nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida, this spring. We work hard all of fall and into spring semester to prepare for this national competition. In order to continue representing Iowa State University in cheerleading and dance, we must fundraise for the many different costs of going to and performing at nationals. These include the expenses for hotels, flights, uniforms and costumes, team meals, team shirts, choreography and music for our routines.

About the Cheer Team

There are 50 members on the Iowa State University Cheer Team. These include the 13 members of the co-ed team and the 37 members of the all-girl team. We are led by head coach Kendra Simpson, along with 2 assistant coaches, Shlisa Rodgers and Darren Papka. We spend much of the fall semester on the sidelines. We support many other sports teams here at Iowa State, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and wrestling. We also prepare all season for our national competition in Daytona Beach, Florida, competing against other D1A schools in both co-ed and all-girl divisions. We put in hard work all season to represent Iowa State University at the national level. All the hard work paid off during our performance at NCA camp this year, where we were able to take home 1st place in both the game day and rally routines. We were given the “Most Collegiate” award along with a gold-paid bid and a silver-paid bid for nationals. We hope to continue this success throughout the year, and deeply appreciate the support from donors within Cyclone Nation to make these successes possible.

About the Dance Team

The Iowa State University Dance Team consists of 42 members from across the midwest. Team members train in more than 10-15 hours of weekly practices in preparation for game day and nationals performances. ISUDT is led by head coach Jill Petersen, and assistant coaches Kelsie Vertanen, Danielle Petersen and Breanna Logan. We help lead spectator enthusiasm during Iowa State Athletic events, including football and men’s and women’s basketball. In addition, we participate in team philanthropic events outside of practice. This includes making love blankets for the Ronald McDonald House in Des Moines, IA, and Adopting a Family during Christmas. Outside of leading crowd engagement in Ames and helping the community, we use much of the season to prepare for NDA College Nationals in Daytona, Florida. While at nationals, we compete in the following D1A categories: Jazz, Team and Pom. Over the past few years, We have brought multiple National titles and rankings as well as a World title back to Ames. We hope to continue to make the university proud and to progress the program. The success of this team would not be possible without the amazing support of Cyclone Nation and donors. We thank you for all your help!

About Our Mascot Cy

Cy is the official mascot of Iowa State University, and his duties are fulfilled by the members of the Mascot Squad. Cy makes appearances at various Cyclone sporting events such as football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball, wrestling, soccer, softball and gymnastics. In addition to sporting events, Cy is often requested to make various appearances across the state of Iowa for a number of events. An interesting fact that you may not know is that Cy competes each year at the NCA College Mascot Nationals in Daytona Beach, Florida. Cy is part of both the Coed and All-girl cheer performances, which helps improve the overall effect of the routines and improve scores. Cy also has a routine of his own where he performs a skit competing against other mascots in order to win over the crowd. The mascot squad works very hard to build the props and sets used in Cy's routine.

 Thank You

The spirit squad is eternally grateful for the support of Cyclone Nation. We would not be able to cheer and dance for Cyclones and represent Iowa State University at nationals without your generosity.
